Pet owners from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds need affordable, high-quality veterinary care. To meet this need, veterinary graduates must be prepared to confidently and competently practice across the spectrum of care (SOC) by offering a range of evidence-based care options tailored to clients' and patients' unique circumstances.
To assist veterinary education programs in implementing curricular changes to enhance SOC preparation, the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) launched the Spectrum of Care Initiative (SOCI) in 2021, with support from the Stanton Foundation. A key outcome of this initiative is the AAVMC Spectrum of Care Implementation Strategies Guide, a comprehensive resource developed by approximately 40 veterinary educators from 25 AAVMC member institutions across five countries, alongside over 25 practitioners and professionals from veterinary organizations. The guide is structured around an evidence-based approach to change management in higher education. It provides strategic recommendations and resources for planning, implementing, and sustaining SOC curricular changes that are applicable across curricular models and learning contexts.
